5 Simple Ways to Add More Fiber to Your Daily Routine
Most people in Switzerland consume around 15–20g of fiber per day. The recommended amount is 30g. That gap might not sound dramatic, but over time it adds up — affecting digestion, energy levels, gut bacteria, and even cholesterol.
The good news is that closing the gap doesn't require a diet overhaul. Here are five practical ways to get more fiber into your day, starting tomorrow.
1. Swap Your Bread
White bread is one of the most common fiber gaps in the Swiss diet. Switching to wholegrain rye or spelt bread is one of the easiest single changes you can make — a couple of slices can add 4–6g of fiber with no extra effort. Look for bread where "whole grain" or "Vollkorn" is the first ingredient on the label, not just a marketing word on the front.
2. Don't Peel Your Vegetables
A lot of the fiber in vegetables sits just under the skin. Carrots, courgettes, cucumbers, and potatoes all have significantly more fiber when eaten unpeeled. Give them a good wash instead of reaching for the peeler. It's a small habit that adds up across every meal.
3. Add Legumes Twice a Week
Lentils, chickpeas, and beans are among the most fiber-dense foods available — a single serving of lentils provides around 8g. You don't need to build meals around them. Adding a handful of chickpeas to a salad, or swapping half the meat in a stew for lentils, is enough to make a real difference. Canned legumes work just as well as dried — rinse them and they're ready to go.
4. Choose Fruit Over Juice
A glass of apple juice contains almost no fiber. An apple contains around 4g. The juicing process removes the pulp where most of the fiber lives. Whole fruit — especially with the skin on — is almost always the better choice for gut health. Berries are particularly good: raspberries and blackberries contain around 6–7g of fiber per 100g.
5. Build a Consistent Daily Habit
One of the biggest barriers to getting enough fiber is inconsistency. It's not enough to eat well two or three days a week — your gut bacteria thrive on regularity. Building one reliable fiber habit into your daily routine makes everything else easier.
This is exactly why we created Fibes. One pouch a day provides around 6g of fiber from a blend of psyllium husk, citrus fiber, oat bran, and real fruit — designed to fit into your routine whether you're at your desk, at the gym, or on the go. It's not a replacement for a fiber-rich diet, but it's a reliable daily anchor that helps close the gap.
A Note on Drinking Water
Whichever fiber sources you add to your routine, drink more water alongside them. Soluble fiber absorbs water to do its job — without enough hydration, high fiber intake can have the opposite of the intended effect. Aim for at least 1.5–2 litres per day, and more if you're physically active.
Getting to 30g of fiber per day is entirely achievable without dramatic changes. Start with one or two of these habits, give your gut a couple of weeks to adjust, and build from there.
